Considering riding the TMT solo?

When it comes to the prospect of motorcycle desert riding, it’s hard not to be inspired by the romantic image of a lone Dakar rider ploughing through huge landscapes at full tilt, with a plume of dust stretching out far behind them.

And at the end of the day, it sometimes simply isn’t possible to wait for all the stars to align and to arrange a group trip, due to competing priorities, commitments etc.

But solo riding will never be as ‘safe’ as doing it in group. To take advantage of the freedoms that solo riding can provide, and to responsibly manage the risks that are inextricably linked to those freedoms, first-time solo riders considering the TMT should carefully weigh up how to do that.

Only you and you alone know your technical, physical and mental capabilities and so are able to determine whether the TMT is the right kind of adventure for you, and that’s especially the case if you decide to ride it solo. As Chris writes in our FAQ section:

“Clearly you must ride appropriately, factoring in remoteness, exposure (ravines), weather, fuel, water, ninja ambushes and all the rest. It’s why some bright spark coined the term: ‘adventure motorcycling”.

So if you are considering giving it a go solo, and want some advice on how to maximise the opportunities and mitigate the risks of doing so, its worth heading over to my site, where I recently wrote this blog, “Getting Started In Solo Adventure Biking In 4 Lessons”.
